The Ministry of Economy announced it will invest about $21 million in the National Road in the two upcoming years. The National Road will be given with concession and two companies will soon submit their offers, according to official sources from the Ministry.
Lately, the government decided to put a toll of EUR 5 for vehicles in the National Road without VAT, a policy that has been criticized by the citizens. According to the Minister, the road will be given with concession within October of this year. The concessionary company will have the obligations to improve the road situation and to maintain it continually based on predefined standards. The concession will be given for a period of 30 years and during this time the winning company will construct, improve and maintain the National Road which connects Albania with Kosovo.
One of the main tasks of the concessionary company will be the collection of road toll and create road’s revenue portfolio which will be used for investments. The company will also have to construct a new bridge in Kukes over Drin River and to implement geotechnical operations.
