OSI Systems has announced the beginning of work in scanning containers in custom points in cross border and port points, based on the agreement reached between the company and the Albanian government. OSI Systems is the parent company of Rapiscan concessionary firm, which in 2013 reached a EUR 200 ml deal with the government for scanning containers.
After many businesses claimed that the EUR 39 tariff set by Rapiscan for the scanning of containers was too high, the government decided to disrupts the contract unilaterally and the company interrupted its activity. The following discussions brought a new deal between Rapiscan and the government, since the company agreed to reduce the tariff for businesses to EUR 22.
The General Director of OSI Systems company with headquarters in California, USA, Deepak Chopra, expressed content for the beginning of work in Albania by saying that such procedure will increase the safety in ports and cross border points throughout the country. The scanning of containers will fight smuggling and the illegal circulation of merchandises, said Chopra.
In turn, business representatives yet disagree with this agreement reached with Rapiscan, after claiming that the expenses of scanning the containers must be totally covered by the government and that businesses shouldn’t pay such tariff.
