In Gjirokastra city is being held the 9th edition of Tourism, Heritage and Handicraft Fair for three days in a row, by Gjirokastra Municipality in cooperation with Mediterranean University of Albania and the Turkish Cultural Institute ‘Jonus Emre’. Handicrafts from all over Albania will gather in this fair in Gjirokastra and showcase their works and traditional values of the country.

The opening ceremony was opened by a speech from Gjirokastra Mayor, Zamira Rami who considered the fair as a very important element for the development of tourism in the city. According to her, “this fair is an important event which is being organized in Gjirokastra since 9 years and now has become part of the city traditions, another added value of a city such Gjirokastra. We want to increase the number of such activities that connect the past with the future and showcase the rich tradition of Gjirokastra and other cities of Albania. Such events are important also for the economic development of the city.”
The novelty of this year’s edition is the holding of Festival of Cheese event which will give cheese producers the opportunity to show their skills in the production of several types of traditional homemade cheese. The fair and the festival of cheese will showcase pieces of Albanian culture and tradition in a world heritage city as Gjirokastra. The Mayor of the city ended her speech by appealing to all the participants to showcase the Albanian values for tourists “in order to give them a small piece of Gjirokastra before they leave.”
